Yankee Magazine"...Waterford--one of the prettiest villages in Maine, with its white clapboard buildings trimmed in forest green--which looks pretty much the way it did in the mid-19th century. The centerpiece of the Waterford Historic district is Lake House, a handsome little inn and restaurant that was built as a tavern in 1797. Innkeeper and chef Michael Myers has been the soul of Lake House for 20 years. The inn once catered to clientele such as Claudette Colbert, Judy Garland, Sterling Hayden, and Mickey Rooney. Today, it's the food that draws gourmets. It is popular with the parents of summer campers on Keoka Lake, skiers from nearby Sunday River, and leaf-peepers with refined tastes in the fall. Meals are served in two dining rooms, one wood-paneled and tavern-like, the other bistro-style in gold and pale yellow. When my family dined there, we shared a rich lobster pie, a succulent roast duckling, and yes, a thick slab of bison served with bourbon sauce. Michael's signature blueberry and blackberry sauce along with a mango sauce made the duckling a savory and colorful hit. The bison, leaner and more tender than beef, had some of its natural sweetness moderated by the bourbon. But the crowd-pleaser of the evening was the dessert of bananas Foster prepared and flamed table side by Michael's wife, Doreen. For my 12-year-old daughter, ordering bananas Foster was like having a circus act for dessert."
